The Orlean Co. was organized and founded by Art Orlean in 1954.
Abel-Bishop and Clarke Realty Co DBA, known as ABC Management, organized in 1957 as the real estate arm of the business.
Larry Looney President started with ABC in 1974.
David Orlean President of The Orlean Co and Vice President of ABC came to work with his father in 1981.
Initially the Orlean Co developed major subdivisions of single-family homes throughout Northern Ohio.
In the mid-sixties he started developing market rate multi-family apartments in the Cleveland area with Ralph Cortel i.e. Acadian, Arlen, Ashby, Abbeshire, Avalon etc.
Art ventured into affordable housing in 1968 when he developed Oakwood Apartments in Lorain.
Art went on to develop over 4,000 apartment homes insured by the Department of HUD under a variety of HUD programs i.e. Section 8, 236, BMIR, 202, 221 D-3, and 221 D-4. He also built properties for third parties as turn key apartments such as the housing authority in Olean, New York.
In the 80s Art acquired The Normandy retirement center and over a period of years developed it into a complete Class A facility. He also developed The Normandy Care Center, a nursing home, on the site and David and Cameron continued with the Normandy Lakeside Assisted Living facility, which opened in 2018.
With an aging portfolio, ABC ventured into the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program in 2010 with the multi-million dollar rehab of Warren Hts Apartments in Warren Oh. Since that time we have completed or are in the process of developing 11 major tax credit deals in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington DC.
Cameron Orlean Joined The Orlean Company and ABC Management as Vice President in 2014.
Although The Orlean Company had served as a developer and participant of the Hilton Garden Inn at the Cleveland Airport in 2000, The Orlean Company’s real foray into the hotel industry began in 2014 with the opening of the Cambria Hotel and Suites in Avon, Ohio followed by Westfield, Indiana (2017), and Bloomington, MN (2019 opening).
In 2018, The Orlean Company participated in the development of The Quarter, Ohio City a mixed use and mixed income development that serves as the gateway from Downtown Cleveland to the Near Westside. The Orlean Company also entered the student housing market with the acquisition of a 400-bed student housing complex located in Pennsylvania. Rounding out the year The Orlean Company acquired a 305 unit class-a garden style apartment community south of Kent, Ohio.
